How to setup a Mac with OS 8.x or OS 9.x for Glinx

Issue: Setting up your Mac to dial up and connect to Glinx. This will also set up Outlook Express for sending and receiving e-mail. Document: 00005

Setting up your Mac OS 8.x or OS 9.x system for use with Glinx is simple. Go through this setup assistant. Please be aware that some screens may be displayed slightly differently or in a different order, depending on which OS version you are running. If the picture on your screen asks for different information than the picture in this guide, skip ahead to the next picture in the guide until you find the information your system requires.

Note: All software products you will be using are distributed by Apple Computer, Inc.

  • The steps will be numbered in the right margin, with the Title immediately left.
  • Things you need to do will be in bold text.
  • Names of things displayed on your screen, like program, menu, button and text box names will be in double quotes, "Like this".
  • Explanations will be in plain text.
  • Things you need to type in will be in type text.
  • Defined words will be hyperlinked italic text.
  • Replace all occurrences of username with your username. When you signed up with your local Glinx agent, you chose a username that would be the first part of you email address.

Run the "Internet Setup Assistant" program.

Locate the "Assistants" folder on your hard drive, and open it.

Double-click on the "Internet Setup Assistant" icon.

You will see this window open.

Click the "Yes" button.

Click the "Yes" button.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

You will notice the number will change to tell you what screen you are on.

Type Glinx in the "configuration name" text box.

Select your connection method, most likely "Modem".

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

These are the correct settings.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

Enter a local dial-up number for Glinx. Find a dial-up number.

Enter your Glinx username. Ensure you add the @glinx.com part. That would make your email address.

Type in your password if you want.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

We do not require a script.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

No, there is not a specific IP address.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

Type in the DNS number 24.222.77.241

Type in the domain glinx.com

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

Now you can type in your email address username@glinx.com

Type in your password if you want.

The ">" symbol is standard for quoted text.

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

Enter your email account. username@pop3.glinx.com

This is NOT your email address, the e-mail account specifies the server where your mail is kept for you.

Enter the smtp server's name. smtp.glinx.com

Click the "Right Arrow" button.

Enter the news server's name. news.glinx.com

Click the "Right Arrow" button

Select the "Yes" radio button.

Click the "Right Arrow" button

Enter the host name proxy.glinx.com and port 8080 (eight, zero, eight, zero) for both HTTP and FTP.

Click the "Right Arrow" button

Click the "Go Ahead" button to save this configuration.

How to connect is described in the middle paragraph.

Your iMac is now set up to connect to the Internet, browse the web and send and receive e-mail.

Connect to the Internet.

There are two different methods:

The "Remote Access" section of the "Control Strip". The "Remote Access" control panel.
Select "Connect". Click on the "Connect" button.

Disconnect from the Internet.

Likewise there are two different methods:

The "Remote Access" section of the "Control Strip". The "Remote Access" control panel.
 Select "Disconnect". Click on the "Disconnect" button.
